Eating Healthy As a Busy Mom

As a busy mom, I’ll be honest, sometimes I think it’s easier to get fast food. And, even though I may order the salad, I know my kids won’t be anywhere near something green or healthy! I know better,this is my bad! But eating healthy doesn’t have to be difficult or take a lot of time. Here are some tips that can help even when time is limited.

Make Breakfast Easy

In the mornings, my house is a madhouse. I start by giving a 10-minute countdown, then  five-minutes, four, and then I still have to wait! But I always stress that they must have breakfast! So, it’s important that I have quick and easy breakfasts at home. Hard boiled eggs are a great protein to have on hand. Boil several, peel them, and refrigerate several during meal prep day so you have them on hand. Greek yogurt is a quick option and if you add some berries and a little granola, it’s delicious! Another quick option, whole grain waffles topped with some fruit, or whole-grain toast with peanut butter and a banana. These are all delicious breakfast ideas that only take a few minutes to prepare.

Pack Lunch

Eating out is not only expensive, chances are, you’ll end up overeating or eating something that’s not so good for you. A healthy lunch only needs to take a couple of minutes to prepare. When I meal prep, I usually pack  my lunch for several days so it’s ready to go. Prepare your own sandwiches at home using lean meats and use mustard instead of mayo. Add a side of carrots, a little hummus and some fruit and you have a great and healthy lunch.

Always Have Staple Foods at Home

Always try to keep staples on stock at home so that there’s no excuse to not cook a healthy meal. Stock up on items like brown rice, black beans, quinoa and shredded cheese. And before you stock up on fresh veggies make sure to meal plan so you don’t end up wasting food.

Plan Time to Cook

Several nights a week I teach Zumba so I can’t cook dinner every night, or else my family will be eating past 9: 30 pm! My husband Carlos usually cooks this nights and does a pretty good job at keeping it fairly healthy. But, if that’s not an option, you can always prepare several dinners on meal prep day.

Try New Recipes

Eating healthy has a bad reputation. People often think you need to eat a salad every day. That’s so boring! Try new recipes! Check out the recipes section of my website for hundreds of recipes! You’ll never be bored! Food should be fun and exciting, not boring.

Living a Healthy Lifestyle Is Worth It

It’s not easy to stick to a new lifestyle. But, like it or not, children are more likely to adopt a healthy diet when they see their parents eating healthy. Trust me, after a while, eating healthy becomes second nature. Better yet, you will encourage your children to live healthy and you’ll also improve your health.
